Our Favorite Places

BARBERTON LODGE , Bubiana Conservancy

The present political situation in Zimbabwe precludes our planning birding tours to that country. However, should you wish to plan a visit, we are happy to help with possible destinations and can provide names and addresses of people still operating in Zimbabwe.

This lodge has one of the most spectacular of settings. Placed on the top of a large exfoliated granite dome, the lodge looks down onto a series of man-made pans built across a stream flowing at the base of the steep slope in front of the lodge. This allows visitors to watch the game coming to drink. The first time one drives up the hill is a bit nerve-wracking, but is actually perfectly safe!

The lodge lies in the Bubiana Conservancy which is large enough for one to feel as though one is in the wildest parts of Zimbabwe. One of the most interesting features of this lodge is the family of Boulder Chats which live on the dome and often come to be fed at the breakfast table.
