This large inselberg rising out of the middle of the eastern end of the Little Karoo near Uniondale offers some spectacular scenery, including especially excellent examples of highly folded sandstones in the Kloofs at the western end. Most of the berg is 4 x 4 country but at the western end is a good road lading into a series of deep Kloofs.
The drive up the steep-sided valleys (called Kloofs in South Africa) is spectacular. Each turn of the road reveals new vistas of huge cliffs with deeply folded rocks being exposed by the water erosion which created the Kloofs. Birds such as Verreaux's Eagle and Cape Rock Thrush may be seen on the rocky areas. Along the valley floor Cape Canaries and other smaller birds may be found.
Birding on the higher levels is determined by the stage of regrowth of burnt Fynbos. On a recent visit one area which was burnt 2 years ago was ablaze with flowering Ericas. This had attracted incredible numbers of the endemic Orange-breasted Sunbird as well as other sunbirds. We also saw a number of small coveys of the Hottentot Button Quail which has recently been split off, as a separate species, from the Black-rumped species found further north.
