RED STONE HILLS, Little Karoo

This small gem of a birding area has access to a large part of the Little Karoo including the Kango Caves near Oudtshoorn, local ostrich ranches etc.

Accommodation is in comfortable cottages offering bed and breakfast, but other meals can also be arranged. The cottages are of various sizes and both groups and families are catered for.

The area is part of the foothills of the majestic Swartberg Range. It is a relatively dry area with the lower areas covered with short succulent vegetation of the “Succulent Karoo” type. The local rocks are red sedimentary rock which weather in all sorts of strange shapes. A number of trails traversing different habitats have been created and others are in the planning stage. The Booted Eagle is a common breeding bird in early summer and may be seen most days. There are many acacia thickets along streams with typical acacia species such as Acacia Pied Barbet. The drier fynbos on the steeper slopes provides opportunities for specials like Orange-breasted Sunbird. The rocky areas provide suitable habitat for Cape Rock Thrush amongst others.
