XAKANAXA LODGE, Okavango

The safari style tents are placed on individual wooden decks to provide better ventilation in the hot weather. All tents have en suite facilities. The camp is home to a number of remarkably tame bushbuck and unusual camp birds such as Black Crake.

Situated on the banks of the Xakanaxa River not far from where it emerges from the lagoon, Xakanaxa Lodge is one of those lodges which offers outstanding service in the middle of the African bush! The staff go to great lengths to ensure that visitors are well looked after and the guides will do all they can to get you into position to see the birds or animals which most interest you.

The Moremi is part of the world renowned Okavango Swamp system. The birdlife is especially exciting, but the mammal viewing is amongst the best in southern Africa. The lions are amongst the most “laid back” of any I have seen – they can be especially irritating for the photographer as they flop down in the shade of the safari vehicle and make photography impossible!

A boat trip into the lagoon and up the river feeding the lagoon must be a highlight for any photographer who enjoys get close to large birds like the Marabou Stork and also big game including elephant.

In spring one can usually visit a Carmine Bee-eater Colony somewhere in the area. Unlike most bee-eaters which nest in a vertical bank, these birds have learned to nest on flat ground because there are no suitable banks in this area. As the flock of birds flies up into a nearby tree the tree turns pink!
