Zimbabwe General Information

 

Located in the southern part of Africa, Zimbabwe is surrounded by Zambia, Botswana, South Africa, and Mozambique . The majority of the landscape consists of plateaus, developing into mountains towards the east.

Zimbabwe has a moderate climate due to its location. The warm rainy season begins in November and lasts through March with average temperatures in the upper 20's and lower 30's (celcius). Winter in Zimbabwe is May through August where temperatures rarely get as low as 4 - 6 degrees celcius.

Harare, the capital of Zimbabwe is a modern city with many interesting attractions and several beautiful national parks. The Mbane Musika Market is a perfect place to purchase souvenirs including crafts and traditional clothing. There are also several museums and if one wants to learn about the history and wildlife of Zimbabwe,

Land Area

150,820 square miles.

Bulawayo, the second largest city, is located 288 miles southwest of Harare and is is home to the Railway Museum and many other historical institutions. There is also the Chipangali wild life orphanage which takes care of sick and orphaned wildlife.

English, Shona, Si-Ndebele, and local dialects.

Two main categories of religion are practiced in Zimbabwe; About one in four Zimbabweans practices Christianity, the rest practice various traditional religions that vary from region to region.

Economy thrives primarily on agriculture (principle crops: corn, millet, cotton), and mining (gold and coal). Zimbabwe's exports are largely based on these products, and they are used by a manufacturing sector. 90% of the goods manufactured in Zimbabwe are used domestically.

For those who are interested in game parks, Hwange National Park is the largest one in Zimbabwe. Located 312 miles west of Harare, this park is home to the exotic animals of Africa. Large herds of wild elephants are abundant as well as lions, zebras, giraffes, and hundreds of species of birds. Zimbabwe is one of few places on the African continent where poachers have so effectively been controlled that endangered rhino herds have shown steady growth.

Of special note, Zimbabwe is the leader in the formation of private game conservancies. Many of these conservancies boast all inclusive lodges where very real wilderness experiences can occur without the crush of tourists.

Warthog

Victoria Falls, located on the western tip of the country, is an excellent city for those who enjoy a more tourist setting of Zimbabwe. One can shop, tour the city by bike, and visit the magnificent Victoria Falls Hotel.
Those considering a trip to Zimbabwe should contact their physician for information about vaccinations. Zimbabwe health standards at most upscale lodges are more than adequate, and are comparable to standards in the United States or Europe. Currently, the only health concern for visitors is malaria which can be effectively avoided with a regime of preventive medicines.

Visa application forms, in addition to being obtainable from the Chief Immigration Officer in Harare, can also be obtained from any of the Zimbabwe High Commissions, Trade Missions or Embassies abroad. In countries where Zimbabwe has no representative, any British High Commission or Embassy may be contacted for assistance.
